Wyoming Carp

Wyoming Carp

RA Beattie is a filmmaker and former fishing guide from the Roaring Fork valley.

RA on filmmaking:

If you asked me five years ago what I would be doing today, I'd probably say guiding in some faraway place--not trying to make a living with a camera.  I started fooling around with shooting fly fishing in college, and over the years it has evolved into a passion that has taken over my life.  I'm obsessed with trying to tell an interesting story. There are fishermen all over the world, chasing every type of fish imaginable, and everyone has a unique story to tell.

On filming carp:

We shot all of the carp footage in a short afternoon session on a reservoir in Wyoming. The water temps were warm, and the fish were thick in the shallows, many of them tailing. At the end of the day we started picking them up on grasshoppers. I shot, yet lost, the coolest slow motion carp eat--then jump--I've ever seen. I think about that shot every time I watch the piece, and actually decided to return this summer to do another carp shoot.

Some Joker Named

It's a shame so many consider them trash. The pic up top certainly seems to tell a different story, more along the line of personality. That's something carp seem to have a lot of.
