Charity Fly Fishing Catch & Release Mako Tournament

This from San Diego shark Captain Conway Bowman:

Bowman Bluewater and Ichthyo-Sys® fishing products are pleased to announce the inaugural Flying Mako™ catch and release mako shark fly fishing tournament to be held in San Diego, California on September 26, 2009. The tournament organizers are putting together an event that combines cutting edge science and social awareness with a unique and spectacular sport. Proceeds from this unique event will go towards: 1) increasing the scientific information on mako sharks that inhabit the Pacific Ocean off of Southern California and 2) the St. Jude’s Hospital and Casting for Recovery charities.

Tournament Objectives:

Promote the sport of catch and release fly fishing for mako sharks. Increase scientific information and public awareness of mako sharks and other apex predators through the purchase and tagging of adult sharks with passive satellite tags. Provide financial support for the St. Jude’s Hospital and Casting for Recovery charities that help people afflicted with life threatening diseases.

The Southern California bight is a nursery for the juvenile makos (10 – 250 lbs), and the waters off San Diego provide a unique opportunity to fly fish for these incredible game fish.

Interested teams should sign up early as slots are limited for this inaugural event. The deadline for signing up will be August 31, 2009. Interested teams should contact Conway Bowman at (619-822-MAKO), or Bob Deibel at (970-420-1660).

The entry fee to participate is $500 per team.
