A fantastic lesser known gem from Rivers Cuomo and Weezer, unearthed from a late night Youtube rat hole. Rig up Simple Fisherman into your playlists, it’s a good one. The accompanying video is the perfect complement, by Connor Clarke(kingcon2k11 on the socials), who is self-described as “like the Ween of music video director editors”. Spoiler, he’s also done some amazing videos of Ween songs too, if you’re into that sort of thing.
From Connor: “Simple Fisherman is an unreleased Weezer song originally recorded as a demo for Make Believe, then sold on Rivers Cuomo’s website as part of Alone IX: The Make Believe Years. It was later demoed under the title “Time Is Running Out” which is the version I heard first thanks to the Dark Believe album on YouTube but I found this version once I bought the bundle and realized I could make a great video for it using 16mm fishing videos. The song was demoed several times by the band in 2004 at the S.I.R. rehearsal studios. It was then recorded during the band’s second attempt at making Make Believe, at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles, CA. It was one of 12 songs that Rivers Cuomo asked to band to only concentrate on, as well as part of the early Unchained Melody working album. Rick Rubin also produced this track with the band as he did with a lot of their tracks in this era.”
