Something Out of Nothing

Bamboo Fly Rods and Custom Guitars

In the world of craftsmanship, some artisans find inspiration in a single medium, while others embrace the challenge of mastering more than one. Olivia Elia, based in Bend, OR, is one such artist. An accomplished guitar luthier, her passion for woodworking led her to the world of bamboo fly rod building.

After searching for a mentor who could teach her the methods and traditions of crafting handmade bamboo fly rods, she connected with Dave Dozer of Bamboo Pursuits. Recognizing her dedication and skill, Dozer offered Elia an apprenticeship, guiding her through the meticulous process of transforming raw bamboo into finely tuned, one-of-a-kind fly rods.

Olivia Elia has a deep respect for tradition and quality craftsmanship, whether she’s building the body of a guitar or wrapping the guides of a fly rod. In both disciplines, she blends artistry with technical skill, ensuring that every piece she creates is not just functional, but an extension of the angler or musician who wields it.

In late 2024, we visited Elia in central Oregon to learn more about her craft, see the places she does her work, and spend some time on the waters that inspire her.
