A statue of Sacajewea, the Lemhi Shoshone woman famously known for guiding Meriwether Lewis and William Clark through what is now the western United States in the early 1800s. Sacajewea’s intimate knowledge of the terrain and her presence as a disarming Indigenous woman were largely responsible for the expedition’s survival and success in reaching the Pacific Ocean. Her life after the expedition has been contested by many historians, but Shoshone oral tradition tells of Sacajewea returning to her people in Wyoming, where she is buried in this cemetery beside her son. Her statue serves as a reminder of the human legacy here. Photo: Bridget Moran
